Gallbladder And Its Function
- The gallbladder is a hollow, pear-shaped organ, situated in the right side on the abdomen, under the liver.
- It primarily stores and concentrates the bile juice, which is a digestive enzyme secreted by the liver.
- As the name suggests, the bile helps in digestion, namely by breaking down the fat.
What Are Gallbladder Stones?
- Gallstones are small, hard, solid concentrated particles that deposit in the gallbladder. The excess component of bilirubin and cholesterol, present in the bile leads to the formation of the gallstones. This mainly occurs when the stored bile crystalizes.
- Gallstones can occur either as a larger stone or as a few in the smaller size. Their size varies from a grain of sand to a small pebble to a golf ball. Often it goes unnoticed unless it starts accumulating more and more mass and causes pain and discomfort.
What are Complications of Gallstone?
- Gallstones in the gallbladder (cholelithiasis)
- Gallstones in the bile duct (choledocholithiasis)
- Gallbladder inflammation (cholecystitis)
- Pancreas inflammation (pancreatitis) due to gallstones
Diagnosis For Gallstones
- Blood Test
- Ultrasonography
- CT scan
- Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP)
- Endoscopic Ultrasound Cholescintigraphy (HIDA scan)
- Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy
- Dr.Manish Joshi and team will make small incisions (key-hole) in patients abdomen after general anesthesia has be provided. A tube with a tiny video camera will be inserted into the abdomen through one of the incisions. Dr.Manish Joshi & team will watch the video monitor in the operation theater & use the surgical tools inserted through the other incisions in the abdomen to remove the gallbladder.
- Once the gallbladder is removed, bile flows directly from the liver into patients small intestine, rather than being stored in the gallbladder.
- Patients ability to digest food remains unaffected by removal of gallbladder and patients can live a normal life without a gallbladder.
- Most of the patients are discharged the next day and can return to normal life in a week.
