Knee Replacement Procedure
At Trustwell Hospitals, we always strive to provide the best possible medical treatment to our patients aiming to achieve the highest possible success rate in knee replacement.
This procedure is done under anaesthesia and your doctor may also recommend one dose of antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection.
During the procedure, your surgeon will make an incision about 6 to 10 inches long, cut away the damaged joint surfaces and then attach the pieces of the artificial joint. Before closing the incision, your surgeon will test by bending and rotating your knee to ensure proper function. The surgery lasts for about two hours.
Post Op Rehabilitation
Most patients spend 2–3 nights in the hospital following a total knee replacement. Your doctor will prescribe pain medication and will monitor you for complications. Before leaving the hospital, most people must reach certain milestones. These include:
- Standing
- getting around with the help of a walking device
- being able to flex and extend your knee sufficiently
- being able to get to and use the bathroom unaided

Dr. Pai is a gem of a doctor. From the very first day, he was very polite and calm. He listened to the issue very clearly and immediately proceeded towards the right direction in terms of treatment. I had this knee problem for a very long time and none of the other doctors could fix it. I’m really thankful to Dr. Pai.

Frequently Asked Questions
There are different types of knee replacements. Options include:
- Total knee replacement: the whole knee is replaced. This is the most performed surgery. After surgery and recovery, many people can participate in activities they used to do, such as walking, bicycling, golf, tennis, and swimming.
- Partial knee replacement, where only the affected part of the knee is replaced. Compared with a total knee replacement the recovery is usually faster and less painful.
- Bilateral knee replacement: both knees are replaced at the same time. If you have arthritis in both knees, this can be a good option, as it means you only must go through the procedure and recovery process once. However, rehabilitation will probably take longer, and you will likely need much more help during recovery.
Your physical therapy regimen will usually begin within 24 hours after surgery.
A physical therapist will:
- help you stand up as soon as possible
- get you moving and help you adjust to your new knee
- record your mobility, range of motion, and exercise progress
- They will start you on exercises to increase your mobility.
It is important to resume normal activities as soon as possible after leaving the hospital.
Early goals you can set yourself include:
- getting in and out of bed without help
- working on fully bending and straightening your knee
- walking as far as you can each day, possibly with crutches or a walker
You should be able to resume most everyday activities within around 3 months. Most people with sedentary employment can return to work after 4–6 weeks, but if your job involves heavy lifting, you may need to wait 3 months to resume work. It can take 6–12 months to get back to full activity levels.
As with all surgeries, below are the risks involved.
1. Complications from Anaesthesia
2. Blood Clot ( Deep Vein Thrombosis)
3. Infection / Wound Bleeding
4. Persistent Pain
5. Nerve damage
Total knee replacement is a standard procedure that thousands of people undergo every year. Many of them have no complications. However, it is essential to know what risks are involved.
