What is a Hysterectomy
- Hysteroscopy is a procedure in which the patient’s womb (uterus) is removed surgically.
- Depending on the condition of the adjoining organs affecting the patient, the doctor may advise to remove the patient’s ovaries and fallopian tube as well.
- It may also involve removal of the cervix, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and other surrounding structures.
What is Laparoscopy
- Laparoscopy is a surgical procedure in which the surgeon accesses the stomach from inside using a small & lighted instrument known as the laparoscope. The laparoscope is inserted through small incisions made near the abdomen area.
- The size of the incision is around 5-15 mm. A small tube will be inserted to pump carbon dioxide. This is done to inflate the abdomen, so that the doctor can see the organs clearly. Once the condition is treated, carbon dioxide is remove and small dressings are applied to the incision.
Open vs. Laparoscopic Hysterectomy
- Previously, open surgery used to be the most commonly opted method for hysterectomy
- However, it used to leave a large scar and took longer time to recuperate post-surgery
- During present times, this method of removing the uterus is considered out-dated by most gynaecologists
- Now more and more gynaecologists are opting for laparoscopic hysterectomy
Who needs a Hysterectomy?
If you have any of the below symptoms, you could be a candidate for Hysterectomy.

- Heavy Menstrual bleeding (D.U.B) that does not respond to medicines
- Fibroids in women, who are over 40yrs, have completed their family
- Endometriosis & Adenomyosis
- Cancer of the Uterus or Cervix of the uterus ovaries or tubes
- Pre-cancerous
How is Laparoscopic Hysterectomy performed?
- During Laparoscopic Hysterectomy, a small entry point is made near the navel (umbilicus) and a laparoscope is inserted into the abdomen after the insufflation of gas.
- With the attached camera, it allows visualization of the abdominal and pelvic organs on an electronic screen.
- 3-4 small incisions are made as entry points on the abdomen wall through which specialized instruments are inserted and the uterus is removed.
