Knee Replacement is a surgical procedure wherein the surfaces of the knee joint that bear the weight are replaced to cure pain and disability. This is also known as arthroplasty. Surgeons replace bone surfaces and cartilages that are damaged by implanting artificial surfaces made up of metal or plastic. Being one of the largest joints of the body the knee is a complex hinge type of joint with three bones: the patella (knee cap), the tibia (shin bone), and the femur (thigh bone). Ligaments keep the knee bones aligned to provide movement and stability to the knees.
When executing a knee replacement surgery, the surgeon gets rid of the damaged or worn out surfaces of the knee joint and then replaces it with the knee prosthesis. The prosthesis can be of two types: cemented and uncemented. A cemented prosthesis is made up of plastic and metal which is attached to the bone using surgical bone cement. In the uncemented prosthesis, the prosthesis is joined to the bone using a porous surface through which the bone grows to get attached to the prosthesis.
The incision is Later closed with surgical tapes or stitches.
